6 Recommendations for Catalyzing a New Era of Israel Education

News

In this opinion piece, Lisa Eisen argues that Israel education in the American Jewish community needs to evolve to meet a moment of heightened polarization and confusion, particularly after the October 7 attacks. She calls for a shift away from defensive advocacy toward an educational approach that encourages curiosity, complexity, and open discussion. Instead of presenting Israel as something to defend, educators should help students explore its history, politics, and societal debates in ways that allow them to engage thoughtfully and form their own connections.

Drawing on recommendations from several Jewish education leaders, Eisen highlights key priorities for this new model. These include better training and immersive experiences for educators in Israel, creating learning environments where difficult questions can be discussed honestly, and teaching students to navigate disagreement and multiple perspectives. She also emphasizes integrating meaningful engagement with Israelis and Israeli society into Jewish communal life. Ultimately, Eisen argues that young American Jews are eager for nuanced and substantive learning about Israel, and that investing in this kind of education will strengthen their connection to Israel and the Jewish community.
